Integrate Nature In Your House

Here we see one possibility how you can integrate nature in your house. In this case the house walls are covered with plants of different kind, this helps also with isolating the interior from hot and cold temperatures but it does imply that you isolate the walls well to protect the interior of humidity that comes automatically with the plants and the area where the roots are attached to the walls or wires that cover the walls. There are of course also other ways to integrate, like for example taking advantage of the topography and surrounding landscape or opening interior spaces up for interior gardens etc., so let you imagination go wild but remember to study all aspects of your decisions well before starting to build.

The lower part of this houses walls are improved with decorative cement elements resembling an iregular shaped stone structure. This protects the lower part of the wall from rain splashes and can be painted like here in a contrasting color, giving the hole structure a different look.

Door Bottom Sweeps

It is a good idea to use door bottom sweeps to seal the gap at the bottom of your door for sound, light, drafts, insects and moisture. Check your local do it yourself or hardware store for the different models that are available and best fit your doors in color and style. Make sure when installing the sweeps that they fit exactly and dont leave room for small insects to crawl in your house or for water to filter trough in a windy rainstorm.

Cement Protection

In order to protect the garden or lawn from water that drops or pours down from your roof you can protect that spot with some cement and stones like in the attached image, some other way also is to include a drainage system so the water flow is underground to the next outlet. Remember that steady drops or downpours will sooner or later damage your garden so its well worth to protect it.

Concrete garden bench

Here are 2 examples of concrete garden benches, these are extremely durable especially for harsh outdoors weather, like we have here in the tropics. For materials we can use even left over tiles to that can be integrated with different designs to your liking, we can use some cement blocks for the foundation and cement plus paint if needed.

Wall covered in natural stone

Here we see an example of a wall that is covered in natural stone, this is not for all walls and in my opinion gets the best effect when only one wall or part of a wall is decorated or built that way. I this case seen in the attached photograph the wall is below a stairway that leads from the ground floor to the second floor. Another important part here is the illumination that needs to get along to get the desired effects.

Contention Walls Terrace Style

In order to avoid an ugly  high contention wall try to build it like a terrace. There are multiple benefits in doing this: for one its more secure as it is in steps so the wall in steps will be firmer then just one high wall, also you may (or not) include gardens in your design to use the terraces for veggies or flowers or just garden lawn. See the attached images of terrace style walls done with local natural stones for some ideas, however the final design should be worked around your landscaping, the style and material of your house or property.

Using colors can make the difference from a boring dull look to an interesting and elegant work of art, experiment with colors, try them out doing a bit of photo shopping or with one of the color design programs that help to choose the right combination before you paint the real thing. Again experiment until you find what pleases  you most.
